about

In 2077 a number of members of a panel of disparate (un)intelligences called "Pile Records," for reasons no longer clear, dreamed, practically in unison, of having gathered a collection of loosely-unconnected music in The Dark Period, which started in March of 2020. They then became aware that the dream created the album in their past.

Seventeen artists, or somewhere in the neighborhood of 17 artists, or anywhere between 12 and 30 artists, anyway, contributed material, some never before heard, some never to be heard elsewhere, some materializing just in the nick of time, to be included on the cassette/CD/eight-track/LP you now do not hold in your hands. The nature of the dreams that created it did not allow for physical manifestation beyond the ones and zeroes (and occasional eights) available in the ephemerasphere.

This compilation features artists we've known over the years to be exceptionally good at making exceptionally weird, dynamic, and interesting music, along with some we've discovered only recently.

Flying Apparatus - out of somewhere in the US Northeast, these dudes have been constructing weirdness on-and-off since I met them on a site called DMusic in the early 00s.

Apertome - apertome.bandcamp.com - a Pile Records founder, member of Halaka, and brilliant synthesist working with Eurorack since before it was cool.

Appalachian Yard Art - appalachianyardart.bandcamp.com - once from Appalachia, now in the Pacific Northwest, performing and recording lo-fi, punk, homemade fuzzy coolness

Zed Salt - archive.org/details/@zed_salt ,
soundcloud.com/zed-salt ,
www.soundclick.com/artist/default.cfm?bandid=98311&content=songs - an independent musician out of the midwest, somehow I also met through DMusic back in the day, with one of the coolest singing voices I know.

Simon Waldram - simonwaldram.bandcamp.com - a singer/songwriter from the UK making brilliant experimental tracks as well as fantastic indie music.

Lampeo - lampeo.bandcamp.com - Buchla Music Easel Artist creating noise and weirdness in Western Maryland

The Creeping Man - www.thecreepingman.com - Minnesota sound collage and video artist, often combining samples from horror and a deft touch with a Digitakt (and a room full of other goodies) to create horrifying and beautiful soundscapes

Halaka - wearehalaka.bandcamp.com , halaka.bandcamp.com - not existing, a fictional collective, unavailable, except when they aren't. half of them don't know the other half.

Manko Force - mankoforce.bandcamp.com

Swandive - soundcloud.com/user-47939846

John P Lyons - Indiana musician recording beautiful songs and atmospherics

Fanch Taylor - claims to be a member of Halaka. no relation to chuck.

Doorknob - what the fuck? These guys/this guy used to be part of Algebrassiere, and likes to scare the birds away with creepy-as-hell looping collage madness

The Kalanchoes - littleredwagonrecords.bandcamp.com/album/lot-q-the-kalanchoes - Still a bit of a mystery, but we love what we're hearing

Algebra Project - Eurorack modular madman

EmoTrashBoy - recording lo-fi goodness like mom used to make, bedroom garage basement music if we've ever heard it
